What is Your Story? - How can you STAND OUT?

On June 5th, 2012 I attended a conference called The Art of Leadership  and wanted to share with you some of the brilliance I heard from speakers that stood out.  There were SO many fabulous insights and if you want to know even more please contact me!


 Marcus blew me away! This is one of the geniuses behind the StrengthsFinder test. I was mesmerized by his presentation on how to STAND OUT- a new algorithm that describes who you are and how best you can lead.

His ideas were simple and valuable:

       What is your story?  What is the narrative that you say lead you to your (professional) position today? The more clear and coherent you are the more people remember
       IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION YOU CAN ASK YOURSELF.
       Authenticity is your most precious commodity
       In leadership we teach concepts and LEADERS catch moments of excellence on HOW THEY DO IT….the technique/concept is not the most important thing.
       According to his new algorithm there are 9 ways people lead…I have included a link if you want to know more.

I strongly urge ALL OF YOU to watch her TEDTalk on the Power of Introverts, now a NY Times Best Seller.

As an extrovert I was deeply humbled by her research, and realized not only do I need to operate differently in my role but I also need to integrate practices that allow me to obtain the POWER of introverts.

Her ideas:

       1 out 3 ppl are extroverts
       Dr. Suess, JK Rowling and the the co-creater of Google are all introverts; Facebook creater Mark Z chose Cheryl S because of her extrovert qualities he does not have…good to have a mixture on teams.
       We believe the most charismatic leaders have the best ideas because in our society we value characteristics of extroverts.
       We are most creative when we are alone, brainstorming diminishes creative because as a group we fear rejection from the ‘extroverts’ who often dominate the discussion
       No such things as a pure introvert.
TIPS FROM SUSAN CAIN
·      Abolish meetings every Tuesday
·      Design office spaces mindfully ( i. e Pixar
·      Make meetings as structured as possible. Ask everyone to write down there ideas..online interactions, brainstorm electronically.
·      Hire and promote more thoughtfully

Wow.

His ideas were on the internet, social media, education and my favourite: Innovation in Education:

       We have produced more data now than we have in the last 3000 years
       Human behavior used to change over a long period of time; Government etc would change our behaviors
       Now, humans benings have changed more than the last  12-15 years that in any other period in human history.
       Technologically has fundamentally altered our behavior over the last decade
       We are not the same people
       We don't fit in here anymore
       30 min there was 3.5 million status updates when Sydney Crosby scored the goal in the 2008 Winter Olypmics...mostly women over the age of 40!!
       Bahvirourlly we are focused on sharing the events of our lives with others...
       We are the guinea pigs....
       The world is spinning faster. Time is changing it is shrinking.
       We spend 2 billion dollars a year on buying shoes online; eBay largest auto selling company in the world; by 2014 of all North American wedding 50% will be from online dating sites.
       2/3 of our work day is from our virtual self- WHICH IS SIGNIFICANLY different from our true self.
       We are 3 times more trusting online that in person if you are on FB it's 4 times
       Internet has rewritten the code on human relationships
       Human relationships has expanded.
       The larger your social graph/social network is online the more success you will reap and you are statistically more happier ( Dr. Bokshi study)
       Our brains work now on transactional memory, finding an answer vs. knowing the answer
